Description
The SeBMS is a standarised monitoring scheme for monitoring butterflies in Sweden. This dataset includes records from traditional fixed transect sites, often called ‘Pollard Walks’, and point site counts which cover a set area for a standardised visit time. The SeBMS is run by Lund University for the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, in partnership with the Entomological Society of Sweden, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, Lund University, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, the Swedish Transport Administration and the Swedish County Administration Boards.
In this dataset, some information is placed in the table ExtendedMeasurementOrFacts (eMoF), which is part of the Source Archive available to download directly from the dataset’s page here on gbif.org. The Source Archive contains the data exactly as uploaded to gbif (verbatim). Should you choose to download the dataset as GBIF Annotated Archive instead, the data has been interpreted and quality controlled by gbif, but, the data in the eMoF will not be included as the eMoF extension is not yet supported by gbif.
Data Records
The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 24,698 records.
2 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Sampling Methods
The monitoring scheme is volunteer-based and runs from April 1st to September 30th annually. Sites are visited 3-7 times per season and are surveyed using a standardized, common methodology. Two different recording methods are used in the Swedish Butterfly Monitoring Scheme. One is the point site counts which cover an area with a 25 m radius for 15 min per visit. The other method is fixed-route Pollard walk transects, typically 0.5-3 km in length. These two methods enable the monitoring scheme to assess yearly changes both in the number of butterflies seen and in species composition. Methods are reviewed in Pollard and Yates (1993) and Pettersson et al. (2010).

Additional Metadata
Important information for potential users of the data from Swedish Butterfly Monitoring Scheme: 1. The data shown in this Darwin core archive are, for each species, the sum total of all individuals observed during this visit. Hence, for transect sites it is the sum of all individuals from all segments. 2. Null visits and zero observations: Users of the data have to construct zero data for each species themselves. The occurrence table contains observations of species that were actually present at the surveyed sites, but the surveyor would have looked for all species that are included in the survey design. For visits to sites where no observations were made at all (when such null visits exist), the occurrence table also includes one zero observation with vernacularName set to "SpeciesIncludedInSurvey", and occurrenceStatus set to "Absent". This is to ensure that information about surveyor is included in the DwC-A also for these events. Additionally, information about whether a visit is a nullvisit (i.e. true = no survey species observed) or not (i.e. false = one or more survey species were observed) is included in the ”extended measurement or fact table”. 3. Site coordinates represent midpoints for point sites and centroid midpoints for transect sites. 4. Values under stateProvince represent 24 of the 25 Swedish provinces (swe landskap). The 25th province (Lappland) is represented by the 5 areas called ’lappmarker’ (swe). 5. eventTime is reported for each sampling event as starttime/endtime, or starttime only.
